with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Standard NFPA 72,
household re warning equipment, denes the NFPA requirements for re
protection in private residence. This standard states that smoke detectors
must be mounted in the following locations:
“Smoke detectors shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area
in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of
the family living unit including basements and excluding crawl spaces and
unfurnished attics.
The provisions of NFPA 72 represent the minimum number of detectors
required by the NFPA. The household should consider the use of additional
smoke detectors for increased protection. It is strongly recommended to put
additional smoke detectors especially if those areas are bedrooms.
